HMS

An HMS carabiner (sometimes called a pear carabiner) is a specific type of carabiner designed for use in belaying systems during rock climbing. Here’s a breakdown of its key features:

  • Shape: HMS carabiners are typically larger than standard carabiners and have a distinctive pear-shaped or offset D-shaped body. This wider top allows for smoother rope movement and easier handling during belaying maneuvers.
  • Locking Mechanism: HMS carabiners almost always feature a locking gate to ensure the rope remains securely connected. Screw-gate closures are common for their reliability.
  • Function: Due to their wider top and locking mechanism, HMS carabiners are ideal for creating a belay point using the Munter hitch or other belay techniques. The Munter hitch requires extra space to accommodate two strands of rope, making the wider top crucial.
