Zipline Trolleys – The Overturning Moment

Most people are unaware of a secret moment during zip line braking, and for good reason. Your attention is drawn to the approaching rider rather than the trolley’s position. However, our developers have paid special attention to braking because it is a critical point of wear for most trolleys.

The momentum of the rider drives them forward and in front of the trolley as the rider trolley begins to brake. Most trolleys are overwhelmed by this momentum, causing the front sheave to lift up while the trolley drags along the line.

All of this damage accumulates over time, reducing the lifespan of these other trolleys significantly.

With innovative characteristics such as forward designs or pivoting designs, we built the LightSpeed Micro, EZ Clip, and Impact Trolleys to prevent the overturning moment.

When the trolley bangs against the brake mechanism and the zip line rider swings up, the trolley does a wheelie on its back wheel. This leads to increased wear and tear since the wheelie action and position frequently force the trolley body to brush against the cable at a high speed, adding to the system’s friction.

It’s not a major deal if this activity happens only once in a while—for example, an emergency stop. However, if this movement is repeated several times a day, the trolley body will quickly wear down, causing considerable cable damage over time.

We came up with two distinct solutions to this problem: one features a rotating attachment link, while the other has a forward-of-center connecting point for the rider. As sites seek longer-lasting, brake-friendly trolleys, more manufacturers are beginning to notice these little design features.

The Micro and Impact Trolleys have clip-in points that are forward of center. This forward design retains both sheaves on the cable for less wear and accommodates the rider’s momentum during braking.

As the rider decelerates, the EZ Clip and the Impact Trolley T-handle accessory both swing forward with the rider’s velocity. This provides the rider with a comfortable braking feel, eliminates the overturning moment, and retains both sheaves attached to the cable.

The LightSpeed Trolleys were created exclusively for zip lining and are built to last. By minimizing the overturning moment found in other trolleys, the forward and pivoting designs reduce wear on your equipment. What’s not to like about equipment that lasts longer and gives your riders a better ride?
